About RSCO

The Greater Hartford Regional School Choice Office, or RSCO, has a motto: Your future, your choice! Families in the Greater Hartford Region have the power to make a CHOICE about where their student attends school. Through RSCO, families choose a free, public school outside their home district that provides the academic challenge and specialized instruction to set students up for success for the FUTURE. RSCO is here to ensure that families know their options and decide the right fit for them.

Our history

In Greater Hartford, families are fortunate to have a choice about where their child attends school through quality learning environments that fit their students’ preferences and passions.

Educational equity for all students

The driving force behind the implementation of school choice in the Greater Hartford Region stems from the 1989 landmark Connecticut Supreme Court case, Sheff v. O’Neill, which declared the existing racial and ethnic isolation of Hartford students of color unconstitutional.

In response, the state legislature and executive branch created an extensive voluntary school choice program — administered by the Greater Hartford Regional School Choice Office (RSCO)— to provide access to more learning environments. The program reflects a commitment to fostering diversity and innovation within the educational landscape, offering an array of public school options in addition to a family’s neighborhood school.

The School Choice program has grown over the years and RSCO looks to expand programming, add seats to meet demand, and enhance the athletic and extracurricular opportunities offered.
